Behavior in Ecuador and New York.

Edith Yumiseba.
Level 4.1.
11/22/2005.

Almost all the time I feel comfortable here because I have found a place for my family to live together in a good condition. In New York I find more opportunities for realizing my dreams. When I was in Ecuador, I only spoke Spanish and in my job only need to Know English grammar a little bit. Whereas in New York the official languages that people speak are English, I need to communicate and understand to other people than living here. Generally spiking, Americans waste all their money buying clothes, cars, and luxuries things while for people from Ecuador sometimes saving money is important. Compared to New Yorkers, who think the most important is spending money on luxuries things, for people in Ecuador, the family becomes the standard of behavior. Ecuadorian people tent to dislike Latin Americans being discriminated against their ethnic.
For example, New Yorkers want to buy the last model of cars on sale. We can see in the high way adults and younger people drive new cars. In contrast, Ecuadorian economy is weak. This country has low flowing money and the people don’t earn too much money. When you see high ways in my country, you notice that people drive old cars. Moreover, only richer people drive new cars.
Another example can be our feelings about pet’s love. Since I came here, I was surprised to see many New Yorkers have an excessive love for pets. New Yorkers have opened different business such as, spas, beauty salon, hotels, hospitals, special website of music for cats and dogs, all those are for lovely pets. Moreover, American people love too much their pets. Indeed, pets are lucky for having good owners. That is incredible. Ecuadorian pet’s owners don’t put too much attention in take care their pets. In contrast, New Yorkers pet’s owners have special attention for their pets. In this example I don’t want to say that New Yorkers are more or less susceptible than Ecuadorians. Despite the fact, I think that New Yorkers have better economy than Ecuadorians. Moreover, that is the reason for their different behavior.
New York is a big city where you find different things. New Yorkers know that they should have insurance for cars, houses and health. Medical services and medication are expensive here. In contrast, this stuff is cheaper in Ecuador.
In New York, the poorest and middle-class households have free or small payments to insurance. The richest households don’t have problems paying health insurance. Moreover, people who are sick not only need to visit doctor, but they also get a prescription and they can be able to buying in a pharmacy.
One year ago, I felt sick. I couldn’t move or walk. I had a hard pain in my stomach. My husband was nervous and he carried me into the car, and we went to a nearby hospital. I was in the emergency room. At the first time, I saw on the wall a motto that said, “All people can be assisted. It is not important immigration status or beliefs.” I stayed in the hospital six days. Therefore, the last day, I felt good I got back to my home.
I felt happy. Three days after, coming back to the financial room in the hospital, I was worried because I didn’t have health insurance. The social worker helped me. I didn’t pay to the hospital although I should pay to medical staff. In fact, now I have health insurance. I don’t worry about the future for my family and me because I learned that all people in New York should have health insurance. In contrast, in my country, people need to have health insurance but they can’t because there is more poverty in there.
In fact, New Yorkers and Ecuadorians have different environment and economy, at last, they have different behavior.

I feel happy here because I have gotten married and I’ll have my own family.

I feel I have become an adult here. In my country I lived with my parents and they took care of me, but now it has changed.

When they came to visit me I had to take care of them. I was proud of that because I could show them my responsibility.

I always know my native country will always be better than New York because I have got those feelings in my heart and in my blood.

I was born there. But, on the other hand I live here and I feel comfortable.

Culture in New York doesn’t cause me any problems with my lifestyle. I know how I want to lead my life.

I prefer the culture of my country. My parents taught me that.

So I choose ways which I am sure of.
I like to cook Polish food, but sometimes I go to buy food from different countries.

I don’t like really American food.

I can say New York is changing my life. I am happy here because I can go to school.

I can see many interesting things, also get to know a lot of people from different cultures

I don’t know how I can explain my feeling. Sometimes I feel angry here because some people are abusive, but other times I enjoy many things. Moquegua, Peru is a small city, whereas New York is a big city. Moquegua doesn’t have many places to visit, in contrast to New York that have many different places to enjoy every day. In my city, things are harder than here because there, all things are manual and I need a person to help me in the house to cook and clean. In contrast, New York is very easy because here, there are machines for everything.
For example, Americans eat fast food, canned food, and the food in not always fresh. In my city, there is very healthy food: fresh, natural and unprocessed.
Another example is that in Moquegua people have other people’s feeling in mind. The family is very important, and when somebody has a problem there is always someone disposed to help. A friend is always a friend. This is in contrast to whit New York, where often no one really cares.
Last week I had a terrible experience. I had to pay a company for a service that I never received and I didn’t know where I could go for assistance.
If somebody asked me which place is better, I would say that neither is better nor worse; they are simply different. Both have things good and bad. It’s important to know to adapt to each situation and to take the good things and avoid the bad things of both.
I think that we need adapt us to live here with all the new technological advances without forgetting our principle or values. We must spend time with the family and friends.

Behavior in Korea and New York

My feelings are complicated in New York, but when I was in Korea I felt comfortable about human relations. People in N.Y. seem more selfish than Koreans. They don’t do something that isn’t for themselves.

People in N.Y. tend to hide their mind because there are many foreigners who don’t know when they will come back to their country even whether they will. On the other hand, people in Korea are more honest and frank. People in N.Y. seem selfish and
calculating but people in Korea help the other people themselves.

When I came to N.Y., people were very kind. Setting up a bank account, taking a train, and eating some food, for everything, I was helped by people. At that time, I couldn’t speak English. Now I can speak English a little bit, for active, such as ordering in stores
and cafes, some thing like that. However, I don’t know how to speak about my profession. In order to learn, I have asked for my friend who has lived here for 5 years. At that time, she annoyed me. That is because she wanted me to do something and she
always added stipulations. It was like an agreement or negotiation. In contrast, people in Korea helped me with any situation. There were not stipulations or agreements. It was just a relationship.

People in N.Y. have a free way of thinking. They don’t care about others behavior and dress. But Korean people care about that. The behavior is a little serious. For example, if some woman is smoking on the street, this behavior is not minded by New Yorker. But if the same situation were in Korea, almost all people would look at the woman and some people who were elderly would criticize her.

Sometimes I like a free way of thinking but it is not big problems for me. It is important to think about other people and have a serious minded. My life in N.Y. is made me think about behavior to other people. I am making an effort that I will be a polite person in N.Y.

I sometimes feel freer here because in N.Y, most people act their own way. They don’t care about other people’s eyes .But in Korea behavior is influenced by other people’s eyes. So we aren’t able to have our way in everything.
Since l came to the U.S.A, I have had many experiences about freedom, especially sexual freedom. For example, in N.Y couples usually give a kiss or hug in public places such as roads, subways, parks, or restaurants. I was surprised because I rarely had seen in Korea. If a couple give a kiss in a public place, many people would stare at them, some people would blame them. We think it is shameful to display there sexual activities. And also when we say hello to someone, we usually make a deep bow. That’s why we aren’t familiar with a kissing culture.
In Korea, appearances are influenced by our ages. Hairstyle of women over forty are very similar. They have a short hairstyle and a perm style. A hairstyle is determined by their ages. Moreover, their clothing also is settled. Old women usually wear a long skirt or a suit. If an old woman wore a short skirt or a pair of jeans or a colorful jacket, she would be criticized foe not dressing pertinently for an older woman.
When l lived in Korea, I couldn’t see a woman who was smoking on the road or at school. We think a woman ought not to smoke. So a woman who smokes should hide the fact that they smoke. Korea women should be pure. In N.Y many women are smoking in public places and on the road with their friends, even with men. America women and men are almost in an equal position.
I think a reason for the difference between Korea and N.Y is that we have a long history and just a single ethnicity. We have Confucian ideas and many stereotypes.

The difference

Shin

I some times feel uncomfortable here because cultures are different from Korea and Asia.
In Korea, people try to think about other people’s feelings. Unlike in Korea, in New York people think of their feelings first.
For example, in Korea, when people want to divorce they think about their families. If they divorced their family’s relationship also would be destroyed. In Korea people’s opinion about divorce is influenced by neighbors. People who think about divorce talk with their neighbors, even though they know their neighbors don’t have the correct answer about divorce. In contrast to Korea, Americans are not often influenced by neighbors or their family. They talk less with their brother and sister about divorcing very seriously because they aren’t very concerned with their family, like uncles or ants.
When I met my conversation paternal in the International Center, I could feel the difference between Korea and America. While he tries to see my eyes on class time, I try to see his nose or mouth. When I asked him why he tries to see my eyes, he said, “It looks more professional.” But it is very rude in Korea.
I think Koreans usually think about “we” while Americans think about “I”. That is a reason for the differences. I want to be a wise person who can understand other country’s cultures very well.

Peru

A president is chosen by people in Peru every 5 years. A president can be re-elected by us 2 times. A president in my country can be impeached by us. Until now, one president has been impeached by the congress. Spanish is spoken by people in Peru. Quechua is spoken by some people in my country. Differences between New York and Kumamoto ( Japnan)

Akiko Uchino
I sometimes feel cozy here because I don’t have to think about or take care of other people too much. Unlike in Kumamoto, in New York the majority of people not only live a fast-paced life, but they also don’t waste any time. Moreover, they like to take advantage as much as they can. Consequently, their manners often seem to be cold toward other people. Generally speaking, New Yorkers do their own thing as a top priority and people from Kumamoto consider what other people do as well.

About Japan

Akiko Uchino

In Japan, a prime minister is designated by congress and is appointed by the Emperor. Although the prime minister can be re-elected as many as possible, no one has been re-elected so far. The prime minister can be impeached by congress. I guess…some prime ministers have been impeached until now. In Japan, while Japanese is spoken by most people, Korean, Chinese, and other languages are spoken by some people (mostly by foreigners). Whereas cars are exported to everywhere, wine is imported form Europe. Japan is considered nothing special country by people in Japan. On the other hand, Japan is considered historical country by people in other countries. Shoji (shoji screen), tatami mat, and Japanese paper are produced in Japan. A diffrent custom between Japan and the USA

“Ladies first” is one of the customs in the United States.
Whenever I am given this kindness with smile by men, I become happy.
However, I think that the custom is almost opposite in Japan. It means that “Gentlemen first” is a common sense in Japan instead of “Ladies first” because most Japanese think men still have a higher position than women do.

When I worked at an Airlines Company, flight attendants sometimes took an elevator with male cockpit crews. At that time, we had to make a certain way for them in the elevator even though they stood behind us. It was one of the severe rules at my company.

Most men in the United States have got used to doing this custom. Therefore, they do it very smoothly and naturally. They hold not only elevators but also doors for ladies. Moreover, they are willing to help ladies who have some heavy baggage. Whenever I see this situation, I became very happy.

Finally, I do not mean that I want to get this kind of favor like “ladies first”. I think taking care of someone’s mind is very important. I do not think Japanese men should follow this custom because Japanese also have their own good customs. If he/she finds that kind of a very good custom that his/her country does not have, he/she should follow that custom because I also follow good customs from other countries.

This is about a sad experience in this country:

I work in a Video store, its nickname is "Peliculas en español" (movies in Spanish) all videos are in Spanish or with subtitles in Spanish. One time a man went to the store and he wanted to buy a movie named "Mi querido viejo" and I said: You can find it in the left side, but he gave 3 or 4 rounds, and after wards he said to me, please help me because I don't know how to read. I helped him and he bought 5 or 6 movies. In the store when the customers buy several movies we open a member card for them and when they return to the store we give them 1 free movie, then I told him: "You write your name in the card" but I was surprised when he said: please you copy my name from my paper I don't know how to write. I commented this to my husband and he told me that this is common.

My surprise was big, because in my country when the people don't know how to read or write, don't have money. Here, there are people that have money but don't know how to read and write.

personal experience in N.Y.

Akiko Uchino
"Go back to the end of the line" a cashier said to me. No sooner did I feel both of humiliated and angry at the unfairness of the situation than I couldn't give her any back talks. A few days after my coming to N.Y. with having none of any English abilities, or knowleadge about N.Y., that incident happened. I was in a long line at the store after i'd enjoyed shopping there. When it fainally was my turn, the cashier asked me something in English. But I couldn't get anything what she said. Moments later that, she expressed her disappointment at my vacant look, and she started yelling at me. I could do nothing but put up with her order. I felt really like a nerd which I'd never felt like that at any stores in Japan. Here in N.Y., every single person speaks her/his mind. Otherwise, he/she would be considered to be a poor judge of character.

First love

Writing4.1

When I was 20 years old. I fell in love for the first time. I was very happy and excited.

I met him in a party. He was tall and thin. He was 28 years old and his name was Ling. Also he was my friend's cousin. My friend had his own business. It was in a restaurant. He planned to open another and he would need somebody to help him. At that time, Ling had just come to Peru. He didn't speak Spanish, so his cousin told me to help him. I accepted the proposition and helped him in a restaurant as a cashier.

No sooner did we talked a lot to each other than we fell in love. At first, my parents agreed with me about the infatuation. Two momths after our loving, my parents wanted me to separate from him. I said, " Why do you want me to separate? " They said it was because he wasn't a good person, but I refused to hear their comments about him.

Not only did I continue with him, but I also escaped my house. I was brokenhearted and I didn't care anything. My parents were very furious. Later, they found me and locked me up in the with a key. Then, I went to my room and closed the door. Half hours after crying in my room, I threw everything of my room and I attempt to commit suicide. Fortunately, I didn't.

Later, I called him to talk about the problem and I said I would stay with you. But he said if your parents didn't like me, so it's better we separated. I told him I struggled hard for our love and at the end you decided to separate. I am disapportianted in you, so it's okay we will separate.

I couldn't forget ever that because it was the worst experience in my life.

THE HISTORY ABOUT "FIRST LOVE."

The title of my story is "First love."I choose that becouse I will write aboute my true story.I am a young person.I'm 23.I would like to describe to you
my first love, who is my husband now.It was eight years ago.I remember that day when I met him. At that time I was fifteen and I didn't think to
about having a boyfriend. I went to school and I had to study. However, I was interested in his personality becouse I had heard a lot of him before. I remember when my friend spoke to me about him.So it was just talking. That happend on vacation and one day I was walking with my friend. He stood with another friend of mine and she introduced us to each other. I was shy of him while he was talkative. I looked at him and I saw his happiness. The next week we had a date.I felt afraid to go. We went to a club. We danced and talked. I started to like him. After the party, he asked me to be his girlfriend. In my feeling he didn't want to wait for that becouse two weeks afterword I had to back home. I lived on the West side while he lived on the East side.It was a long way between us.We wrote many letters to each other which my husband keep to this day and we both called.I believed him and he believed me.When we could meet each other we were happy. It was not often. After two years I moved to my aunt, who lived close to his house.I went to school there. We wanted to be together.Sudenly we met every day.We were teens but thought like adults. The next two years flew fast and he had to live our country. He came to New York.I was one year without him.We missed each other very much, but he visited me three times in one year. After that I came to New York to be with him.Our time in Poland was full of young love.He was very gentle for me.He took care all the time and was serious with everythig. Now we have been together eight years and often we recall that time with smiles on our faces.Sometimes we're loughing about how we both tried to love.We didn't think of breaking up.So we know that day when we saw each other we fell in love.We are proud of that and always say "We are first love."Now we are year married. Our baby is coming on April. We are going to be great family. We spend every day together and we can't imagin to be seperate. Our love is strong and that gives us power to build our life.It helps us to choose good way.I love my husband very much.

REMEMEBERED A FRIEND

Thirty years ago, I met Dr. Huertas. She was the General Director of the Region of Health of Moquegua. We became very good friends. We worked together 5 or 6 years. She had lived in Arequipa before she began to work in Moquegua.

When she arrived at her new job, I was working there. We realized a lot of work together. She was a doctor and it was the first time that she worked in adminstration. We shared a lot of time and many things because we were two women among many men. In addition, we traveled to different places because our work required it. When we traveled to share the room in the hotel, and we were talking until late.

It was six months after we were working together that we talked about our problems. She had to abandon her family in Arequipa to work in Moquegua. She was married and had two children (two girls) and her husband wasn't working at this time.

She missed her daugthers a lot and began to have problems with her husband and with his family. They studied together in the same high school and they thought they knew each other, but it wasn't this. They were completely different. She thought in the family, while he was thinking in himself.
I thought that he was very infantile. His mother tried him as a child. She brought her daugthers to live to Moquegua.

Now she is separete from her husband and lives with her daugthers in Moquegua. She has a quieter life.

When I entered the church’s young adult group meeting room, I didn’t

believe my eyes. Not only did I see charming black long hair and dark eyes

blinked, but also wore a pink sweater and cute glasses. Moreover, she

looked like a lovely deer and her lips looked like cherries. At that time my

heart went pit a pat and my eye shook a little. It seemed that if someone

touched me, my heart would explode. Whereas she was very silent, I was

very unsteady. Finaly, the church’s group meeting finished and I said,

“ Hello, nice to meet you” to her and then she also said, “ Me too”.

Afterthat, I thought why I didn’t I see her, while I attended church.

Time passed by. I was impressed because she had a mild voice and cute

smile. In addition, she was kind to me. Indeed, she had a nice personality.

No sooner did I know her features than I fell in love with her. Now I believe

that God prepared her and my marriage life. Not only did I truly love her,

but also she truly loved me. Two months from now I will go back to her and

I’m very thankful to God!

The main entrance was packed. Black-colored hair and uniforms made a dim hallway even darker. It wasn't until crowds of people were gone that I pushed to get to the front. No sooner did I find my name than I felt sad.
In April in 1995, almost all students passed on to the next grade. On the first day of spring semester, I had to check my name and a room number on the bord. My room number was 2-1. I could find no one's names who were not only friends of mine, but who also studied in a same class before. A few minutes after my seeing the room number, I started walking along with dragging feet.
I set foot in the class. A few moments after that, someone called me. When I looked back, a younger-looking girl was standing there, and she started to introduce herself. "call me YUKA" she said in the last of her introduction, and that was very vivid in my memory. Soon after our having conversation, a teacher came in the class and made us take a seat in HIRAGANA order. When everybody in the class started moving to take a right seat,

Music and my life

Lights were splendid and the mood was filled with excitement.
Sometimes, lights were too glittering, so I couldn’t see him.
Everybody was delighted and enjoyed his concert, Jamiroquai.

Everyday, everywhere I enjoy music. Not only do I love music,
but I also enjoy performance, especially rock and pop music.
When I was about a 12 year old girl, I began listening to songs
like “Knife”. Since I was a high school student, I joined
some music clubs. At that time not only did I listen to
various kinds of music, but I also talked about music, musicians,
bands and some information with other members.
Moreover, I played the flute in my high school orchestra.
These things made me more emotional and shaped my sensibility.
That is very helpful to me still now.
When I get some stress from social life, music can get rid of that
and help my life become richer.

I think music is not only a good friend for me,
but it also is energy of my life.
Indeed, I need music everyday.

In October 12,1985, it was a clear and cool day in a fall season. On this day there were many small birds that had different colors. The birds always sang melodious songs when they flew in the air.
When the students came into a big building they went up to the second floor. They were looking for class room 203. The students were approximately 30 people in the class-room. The first impresion was that they didn't know each other.

My pictures involve my life

Yunmi Choi

I have lots of hobbies. Not only do l like to cook for my friends and my brother, but also like listening to music. In addition, I like taking pictures. The most interest thing is taking pictures. l always bring a digital camera because l can not know what will happen to me.
For example, l was able to see very unique and a beautiful scene. I wanted to keep it in my camera. If l took a picture, l would remember at that time. It was not until l had seen the pictures that l remembered. My pictures function as my diary. They show what l did, what l ate, whom l met, what l saw, so on.
I started to take pictures when l entered a university. No sooner did l buy a camera than l took pictures of my friends, natural things, buildings, and myself.
Increasingly, l became interested in photographs. So l decided to study the Photoshop program. I tried to use a computer because l wanted to get better pictures. I did not know how to use a computer before l became interested in pictures. After l studied about photographs by myself, l could know how to use a computer a little bit. I continued studying. Photography is changing my life. I am able to study more. I can be reminded a long time ago. I can remember my important person and valued things.
I will study more because pictures could involve my whole life.

My Best Friends-Young
When I was 18 years old, I met my best friends. We were classmates. Actually, I didn’t remember when we started making a relationship. After some days, even though we lived in different boroughs, we went the home after finishing the school. Maybe it was the start.
My best friends are Hyeo jung and In young. Hyeo jung’s nickname is Park because it’s her family name. In young’s nickname is blackbean. That was made by our English teacher because she is both so small and a little overweight. Moreover, she has a small black face. On the other hand, Park is both tall and thin. In addition, Park and Bean differ in terms of opinions. Park has straight talking but Bean talks more carefully. Indeed, we don’t have the same things.
While Bean and I attended a university, Park worked in a department store. The job was too hard and finished too late. So, we didn’t meet many times. Even though we had a cell phone, we didn’t usually call. But when we met after a long time, we were not at a loss for word.
After graduating from school, we had a lot of time. Suddenly we could meet often. Again, we knew each other by talking together about life. Even though now it is 8 years after we met, we never have changed our relationship.

My History of a Friendship

My important friends are co-workers. I spent not only wonderful time but also hard time with them.

I was a flight attendant in Japan. After I entered the company, I had to take hard training for flights. Therefore, I met them in the training center. At first, we could not know anything we should do. Our officer was so strict that we sometimes cried. Therefore, we helped each other every day. Finally, we passed the final check and we were able to be flight attendants. We had been a training center for two months.

After I became a flight attendant, we could not meet each other often. However, whenever I met them, I felt comfortable. I thought that they seemed my family.
I sometimes met them during days off. We went shopping, had coffee and made a party. Whenever we met each other, we always talked about our company, boss and love. It was a great time for me.

When I quit the job, my co-workers gave me a lot of flowers and cards with messages. In addition, they made a party for me. At the time, I recalled the time we spent.

My life in Japan Airlines was a very important time because not only could I meet my special friends, but I also received a lot of kindness from them. I will never forget time we spent and I would like to keep our friendship forever.

When i was a high school student, I met my special friend. At first when i saw her in our classroom i didn't like her.
She looked like a bad student and i smelled smoke from her. Also, i heard that she spoke about me with bad words.
All of those reasons made me angry and i couldn't like her. One day, i had a chance to talk with her in a gym class.
I asked her, " Whar do you want to be in your future?". This question made us close. She answered my question,
" I hadn't talked to other friends about my dream so far."
Afterward, she told me that she wanted to be a doctor. Her dream and my dream were the same so we felt that
we could be close friends. Later at that time, we always talked about our dream and how to study to do and so on.
Also, she was so kind and wasn't a bad student, but she smoked.
She was so smart; also she tried to study hard. But she and i couldn't go to Medical school, we didn't give
up our dream and we still try to be doctors. Now, she studies at Dr. Hwang woo-suck's lab.
We believe that if we try to be a doctor continue, we can do that. It's important to believe each other, Whar ever we do.
When i talked with her at first, i realized that i usually had a preconception about a friend. It was bad for me. If i
hadn't talked with her, i would still have a bad predudice and i couldn't get a good friend. From that time to now,
i try not to hear about a friend. If i heard that i don't believe that until i see with my own eyes.

My History of Friendship / Ryosuke Sohama

When i met him that the first time, I thought I couldn't make a friendship with him because his looks were a little bit scary and hi didn't smile much. Indeed, that looked like statue.
When I met him that was two years ago when I worked at a restaurant. He worked at there before I worked there and so he had gotten experience of a waiter and bartender much more than me but he had never taught me about how I take a order or how I make a drink.
I learned about thouse things by myself because in that restaurant, nobody taught about it. In addition, I had to steal thouse techniques, which was very ridiculous.
However, in Japan, most jobs or food industry people think that way is the fastest way to learn. while that was very difficult the first time, that was never forgotten. Moreover, if someone learned about that from someone, this person would forget it the next time and this person would ask someone that again. Therefore, we have to create our own way.
I heard it from him and I will never forget it.
