KONRAD, "Hubert's story"

Konrad, the corrected version of your writing is below your original. In fact, the writing was 99% correct.

Hubert was born in a very poor family in Ukraine. Nothing came easy for him and he hated his job and life. Then, one day he got an opportunity to go to USA, but he did not have the money for an airline ticket. So he worked day and night to make his dream come true. Once, he even blacked out in his job and was transported to emergency room. But eventually he managed to earn enough money for the flight. On a sunny day of June Hubert flew to New York. That day changed his life forever. Although the beginnings were hard and he worked as a delivery boy, he was happy. Unfortunately, one day he was hit by a bus. He landed in a hospital, but eventually received money from insurance. It was a turning point in his life because he realized how fragile life can be. That’s why, he decided to get some education and study hard.

After graduating from college, Hubert works now as an account specialist in Citi bank.

Riccardo's writing

Riccardo, this is the corrected version:

This is the story of a young man. His name is Mark Sanchez. Mark was a quarterback from the University of Southern California (USC). He wanted to be a professional football player and came to the New York Jets last year. As a rookie he did a good job, but this year he is doing great so far. The only problem for him is this: He got into using steroids to get more muscles and be more strong, because as a quarterback you receive a lot of impact to your body. But that is the price some peoples have to pay to be rich and famous.

JHON AGUDELO HOMEWORK FOR SATURDAY OCTOBER 30 2010

Jhon, I have posted the corrected version of your writing under your original (the word most people use is "brewery," although "beer factory" is not incorrect.

Hello teacher!

I am going to write you about a friend of mine.

His name is John Fredy. He lives in Medellin Colombia. He was born in 1970. He is one of my best friends, so to say, the best one. He was almost all the study years with me, more o less 7 or 8 years together.

He introduced all his family to me. They are so special with every body. His father has been so nice with me, and his mother has been so kind with me too. His father is a photographer and his mother is a house keeping. My friend has a sister too, she is married and she takes care of her kids. She has four kids, two men and two women. His sister is younger than my friend but she began so young to have kids.

My friend John Fredy is working as an electrician technic in a factory that produces beer (brewery or beer factory. I don't know what of those two words are better) named Bavaria or Pilsen. They sell one of the best beers at Colombia country. My friend enjoys working there and he is so happy with that kind of job.

In this moment, John Fredy is single but he has a girlfriend and he told me, at the beginning of this year, that he was thinking on get married at the end of December of this year. I said congratulations to him because of that decision and I would like to be in his wedding but I think that I am not going to have money to go to Colombia because I am so new here in this country and I don’t have a job to gain money and can go to my country and being with my friend in his marriage.

Ok teacher, this is a short story about my best friend John Fredy. I hope you like it and correct my mistakes in writing.

Thanks for all your help with my learning of the English language.
God bless you and have a good day.

Saturday homework

Homework:

The homework is to write on the blog a summary about a person. You can write about Sunny or about a friend of yours or about a fictional person.

I know you are busy. You only have to write a short paragraph:

example: He was born in Mexico and moved to New York when he was ten years old. He has been living in Brooklyn with his sister and her husband for three years. His dream is to be a horticulturalist, and he is studying botany at Laguardia Community College. In the future, he is going to enroll in a master's course at Columbia University.

Book recommendation:

You don't have to buy a book for class. We are practicing grammar in class and on-line. If you want more practice with a book, you can try one of these. Both are good for learning and review:

1. "Understanding and Using English Grammar."

The writer is Betty Azar

and the publisher is Prentice Hall Regents

It is available at Amazon.com (online only)

http://www.amazon.com/Understanding-English-Grammar-Student-without/dp/013958661X

and

2. "Grammar In Use"

The writer is Murphy.

The publisher is Cambridge

It is also available at Amazon.com

http://www.amazon.com/English-Grammar-Use-Answers-Intermediate/dp/052143680X

If you prefer to go to a bookstore, a bookstore that sells textbooks is Barnes and Noble. I suggest you call the store before you go to be sure they have the book. You can find store locations and phone numbers here. (Don't be shy. Just ask, "Do you have Grammar in Use? The writer is Murphy. The publisher is Cambridge. Oh, really? You have it? Could you please tell me the price?")

The Light Eater Junho Lee

Oscar is trying to fix his food plan so that he can live longer. As studies have shown they said that if you eat less than you live longer. In this story the character, Oscar talks about making himself dinner. It was 11 p.m. and he was trying to make pasta. In the story it talks about how he uses ingredients and adds them to the pasta. It mentioned that he liked the pecans the best because there were so little of them. After he finishes off with the pasta he ends with a dessert with Hersheys dark chocolate and milk. He mentions that in the end, the pasta was worth waiting for.

this is junho and my classmate

1. Are there a lot of obese (very fat) people in the U.S.? In your country? (yes, there are. No, there aren't). Please explain.
- What makes people fat? (answer example: "no exercise" makes people fat)

There are not many obese people in Korea because Korean people
don't like oily food. Korean people eat Kimch everyday, so it makes
them to stay healthy and slim.
- No exercise can make people fat, but I guess what you eat is more
important. If you want to stay away from obesity, you should control
your diet.

2. Is there a high obesity rate in your country?

No, It's less than 10%.

3. Why or why not?

Because Korean people eat Kimch and other vegetables almost
everyday and we don't eat a lot. We also like to exercise.

4. Are most people in your country well-educated or not? Why?

There are least percentage of illiterate people in Korea. I guess
it's because Korean parents think education as a very important
matter.

5. Is the life-style in your country different from the life-style in the United States? How?

Yes. I used to play a lot with my friends in Korea, but I have to
study english very hard in the U.S.

6. Who has a higher obesity rate, well-educated or uneducated people?

I guess American people have higher obesity rate. It's less than
10% in Korea, and more than 30% in the U.S. Also, Korean people are
more educated than people in the U.S because almost 99% of the Korean
can write and read their own language.

7. In the world, speakers of which language are most obese?

I am not sure, but I guess English speakers are most obese because
of the food they eat.
