Each country has their culture as they have different appearances.
But we are sometime shocked because of different cultures even though we know that exists. Some of my friends who live in N.Y. said, “I can never understand it. They are too selfish. Not only people do so, but also the society system does.”

For example, the MTA often constructs without any previous notice, and as a result of that many passengers who are in a rush suffer inconvenience. In Korea, we couldn’t imagine this situation, construction without previous notice apart from an emergency.
It means the MTA only care about their plans or staffs. They should’ve made an exact schedule in advance.

And other example is some of staffs who work in shops. They don’t focus on their jobs. They often have small talk, make phone calls and sing despite long line. So they make customers keep waiting for long time. In contrast to Americans, workers in Korea can’t do anything during work time. They have to take care of customers first.

In my case I thought they are selfish.1month ago I rented an apartment next to build construction. Every 7 am in the morning the construction stats, even thought it is time most people sleep. So sometime I can hear the sound some of residents argue with worker. Of course construction is supposed to make noise but they didn’t try not to make noise like a noise blocking wall or they must avoid the morning time.

Of course above examples doesn’t represent all Americans figure but when I see something like that, I can’t help being startled. There are some of reasons. First of all, N.Y is very busy city and individualistic so that it takes N.Y citizen’s spare times to think of other people. The other reason is they tend to think about their won right even thought they could bother other people.
I Think first thing we have to do is care about other people before doing.

My writing abot Yeltsin

I'll write about Bill Clinton's article. The reason why I choose this one are two things. First, due to this article, I realized that Yeltsin is a great man who contributed a lot of stuff for Russia. The second is that I was already interested in politics and in history. So the day when I studied about this article, I participated in class with positiveness unique among the so mant days since I attend here.

Bill estimated Yetlsin's achievements highly. I think he is right. Yeltsin guided Russia people steps in the path of righteousness. He made sure that Russian people never again live under communism, while keeping a partnership between Russia and the west. We know that he loved Russia and Russian people, on account of these reasons. In spite of economic and political problems and some nationalists who had opinions opposed to Yelsin, he led to decisions that to give up new clear weapons

Who Is Taking My Cheese

I read this book many years ago. It's an interesting story and told us a great principle.

It's said that there were three mice in a maze and they were looking for the exit. They were very hungry. Maybe they would be dead before they got out. But they found a lot of cheese in a place, they were very happy and stopped looking for the exit. They took the cheese every day until they finished. They said, "Who is taking my cheese?!" When they didn't have any cheese. In face, it was them. They continued looking for the exit or any other cheese. Finally, they failed and they were all dead in the maze because of hunger.

It told us that if we had some luxury to do something before we were done, we should worry and think about what would come.

When I met a friend,who was my firend from high school recently. We went to the theater, and bought two tickers to '300'. I looked forward much to this movie. Everyone said to me,"It's great movie! Big scale!" So I looked for a person to go to theater with me. And i make a promise with my friend.
When that movie started, we could concentrate, but i couldn't see subtitles and captions. Therefore, I had to listen carefully. However, it sounded like a machine gun. It was so terrible, very fast! And they had different pronounciation, and accent. It was hard for me. So, i saw just their actions, movements in the screen.
Nevertheless, I could understand that movie's story because it didn't have a long and complicated story. It had a short story, and was just about war. I can summarize that movie's story very briefly. A long time ago, in Europe, Sparta, which was a small city state, had vety strong soldiers. When Persian messanger came to Sparta, he said,"Your county has to surrender to Persia." BuT, Sparta didn't accept that, and killed him. So began war. Persian's army has a great number of soldiers but Sparta had only 300. Even so, Sparta fought against Persia.
Finally, the 300 spartan soldiers were killed by Persians. It was very impressive to me, 300 VS 1000000..... Is it possible? Sprtan had great bravery. Their king was the greatest guy. I should learned from him about his bravery.

my value

Almost every individual has an important value for him or her. A modicum of this value determines some life experience for a person in the future. I esteem my value for a better life and my value which starts in a university.
I studied mechanics three years in high school and two years in an associate degree program in my country. I liked my major and I was interested in it so I decided to study in America for a university education because I already had some experience about my major.
When I came to America, I had never known about English. The situation was so bad and boring but fortunately, I had a brother here who has helped for everything. All of them I never lost my hopes.
I am thinking about my education and career because I want a good life in my future and so I want to take the first step to start a university education.
After starting a university education I want to work at some companies in connection with my major. I want to earn more experience before beginning the work life.
I think I will realize my value in the shortest time and maybe I will go back to my country. Sometimes I think if I didn’t have this value maybe I couldn’t have come to America.

I am from Turkey. I lived there many years and has been living in America since 2005. I have learned many things about cultures, life, native and other countries people, culture and behavior. I feel myself more comfortable, better and freer in America because nobody cares and meddles in my life. I think my country people are not individualistic and they are constantly broad-minded when they want to say or feel something. I saw in my country that people are really altruistic, especially in the part known as Anatolia. However, sometimes in big cities like Istanbul of these people can be rude.
For instance, I like clothing style in America because nobody says anything whether what I wear or my clothing is adaptable or not. I saw here every people can dress without thinking of other people. While the living in America I have never been used to American food culture because the tastes are different between the two countries and I hope I will like.
Other examples can be seen in our feelings about age, feelings about family, and attitudes about marriage. Since I came to America, I have seen that American girls and boys can be free after eighteen and they can live in a world of their own. In my country, girls and boys can live with their families until getting married or a long time. We have strong behavior that we learn to respect there older than us and elderly people from our families.
I have had many experiences in New York. For example, you can’t smoke in a close area and public zones here, but in Turkey you can smoke wherever you want. IT shows us, we don’t care about people's opinion and health.
America is a big country with a multi-ethnic culture and Turkey is a small country that has single-ethnic culture, but our culture I think is very old because it has come until today never changing since the Ottoman Empire. Firstly, I was not used to America’s multi –ethnic culture because it was really sophisticated for me but in the course of time I learned many things about multi-ethnic culture.

New York should clean town up!

When I first come to New York, I was impressed that it is dirty, noisy and smelly here. In Japan, there are clean cities, quiet everywhere and it is not smelly. I was surprised by them.

In the case of the subway, it is not comfortable. It's like an earthquake. I couldn't keep standing without holding something. It is dangerous there! Also subway’s announcements are not clear. I couldn’t catch what it said. The American subway often changes traffic and schedule, so I was often confused about that. I had never gotten that experience. Moreover, it is very smelly. My nose would break.

In New York, there are too many homeless. I was surprised by it. Of course, Japan also has them but they are less than America. However, I was also surprised about the care system of Americans for homeless, for example, donations, free food and shelter. In fact is it good idea? I have no idea. I think American people need to think other way. They have to think some ideas before it happen what they could do. It is a fact that they are never born homeless. I hope so.

In my case, I met a funny homeless guy. When I met him the first time, I couldn’t notice that he was homeless. He spoke to me when I sang songs in Washington Square Park. He was friendly. Then he gathered people in front of me, and also he gathered money from them. I thought he was a kind parson because he gathered money for me, but it was not that. Instead, he gathered money for himself. When I noticed that he had already disappeared in front of me. I could never experience such a thing if I didn’t come to New York.

The bottom line is that New York is dirty. In contrast, Japan is clean. They spend so much money cleaning up cities. The American government should think about doing that. They should give up spending money on unnecessary things. They have to clean town up, including the homeless.

NEW YORK vs BOGOTA

In my short life in New York i have been able to find different characteristics between my native city, BOGOTa and the world capital, New York.

The first differentce is that New York is a multi-ethnic city, In New York speak more than 50 languages. If you take the train for example you can listen to maybe 3 o for 4 different languages, where as in my village you only speak and listen to spanish. If you listen to other languages it would be because that person was a tourist.

In New York you can find special neighborhoods in which other languages are spoken and sometimes get training to speak English if you don't speak the native language the this place for example in lower manhhatan is located chinatown and little Italy Moreover if you have different sex inclination in manhhatan there exist one neighborhood in the Eastside called "the Village" and in this place you can find many differents kinds of places where you can enjoy yourself. In Bogota there didn't exist special neighborhoods with one kind of special blood.


New York is four times bigger than Bogota, Bogota is only Manhhatan.


People in New York have open minds and don't criticize othet people and do whatever they like. About infrastructure New York has more than Bogota only with said that the Brooklyn bridge has more the one hundred years, the building more high in Bogota has 32 floors.

However, in the last years Bogota has been changing so Bogota is a bad copy of New york

A Value

A Value is the most important thing for me.It's one of the good things in my life.With out value,there is no hope in this world and ther is no civilazation.I took value from my family from my father ,from my mother even from my grandfather.
Value is character , what kind persons we are, what type persons, good or bad.We even took value from how we were developed , if we were rich or poor .
My family gave me alot of values, some of which are that.
a)They told me ,that I must to love my fellowman.
b)They taught me to give help to other persons.
c)You must appreciate the person who gave you help.
d)You must try to help the other persons and those persons who really need help.
e)My father told me love your coutry and fight for her.
They told me and many other things,but these I think are the most important.
Vlue is that which gives each person the face ,profile,the personality.With out value you are just one thing who looks arround, with out meaning.Value is a feeling,it's a style it's all things in the world.20 years ago we had value ,but now we don't.We are procceding toward desruction.

My most difficult decision was when i decided to come to New York. Ut was very difficult for me to decide this because i knew tha i would miss my friends and my country. However, i said to my self, "whatever", and i came.
When i arrived from the long flight, my uncle picked me up from the airport. On the way from the airport to his house the neighbourhoods and the streets seemed vary strange for me. Mostly the trains were very strange because i had never seen a traun in my life, only on television.
During my first days in New York i was thinking about if i had chosen the right decicion. Everything seemed very different from what i expected. I realized it would be a little bit hard for me to get used to this country.
My first day at school, indeed, i was little stressed, from a different culture, different language and most of all, different personalities. I could not enen speak any englishat all, only a few words, Bythe way, all my teachers were very kind with me. They were trying to explain everything to me very clearly. At the third month i began to get used to being here. It took me a long time. Also i made friends and my english was better.
Since the time i came to New York i am very happy with my advance in the english language and i am vary proud of myn self with the way i am living here. I am very sure that decicion which i decided will pay off for me. I can achieve a lot of things. I think because i am in New York and it is easy for you to be able to have good opportunities.

Behavior in New York and Korea

As I think of the difference between two countries, the U.S and Korea, the U.S people seem to be outgoing and in contrast, the Korean people seem to be reserved. Generally speaking, Americans have confidence in what they want to do, and Korean do not. This tendency can be observed whenever, especially in classrooms more and more.

For example, Americans do something without any hesitation. Actually, all of the people except Korean, speak to other people naturally. Also, they can sing a song using earphone in the subway or in the streets. Moreover, we can see some people who have a talent about dance, song, drawing...etc in every place. In contrast, Koreans don't like to express themselves. Of course, some people show their talents in some places, but not everyone. Most of the people keep their feeling and thoughts in their own mind without expressing them. They believe that it is a virtue and consideration for the public.

We can find another example in some conversation between Americans and Koreans. Americans speak with someone freely. They don't need to use polite expressions when they have conversation with those older than themselves. Also, they speak to companions directly. Koreans, however, don't say "no". If they have an opposed opinion, they speak by detour, not straight. Unlike in the U.S, We believe these are virtues and consideration for other people.

I know from my experience that Koreans don't interrupt the teacher's speaking. If they want to ask him something, after he has done his speaking, we ask him. Actually, I too did it. But nowadays, I have changed to the American style. It's a better way to improve the better conversation, I think. Because if we ask the questions to the teacher after finishing the class, the questions might be uncertain or not remembered. Actually, I did it. So I have been trying to change it as a this way.

The differences the reason why happen two countries are caused by construction of society. Because of Confucian ideas, Korea has been valued politeness above everything else. I think it's not bad. In contrast, sometimes Americans need to speak by detour. So both of countries need a matter of finding a happy medium. Because of social atmosphere, most of Korean might be a reserved. Although two countries have a difference about character, understanding and respecting for each other, everything will be fine.

Behavior in New York and TURKEY

Actually we have too many common ideas and different ideas.New York is a melting pot absouluetly,in which way many different cultures and people live together.They could be different religion or languages but they can live together and eveyone accepsts the other peoeple's and culture.New Yorkers are broad-minded

In Turkey,We have lived for years with people of another ethnicity and different religion.Sometimes we have some problem with each other.But we are not out going people and we can not accept different culture and people very easyly.

I have had many experiences in New York.For example,you cant smoke in a close area and public zones here,but in Turkey you can smoke wherever you want.IT shows us,we dont care about people's opinion and health.

Anyway,In New York everything is for people.

I KILLED MY BEST FRIEND

I remember when I made the most difficult decision in my miserable life. I killed my best friend to be a marine.

It was a friday the 13th in 1998 at night When i decided to enlist in the U.S.A army to be a marine. My partner was pregnant, so I needed money to give the best life to my family. One day I heard that if you went to the army uncle SAM would pay for the career what wherever you liked. At that time I was desperate so the last single opportunity was to serve the native land. I decided to go the marine's because When I was a child I had a dream of living in an aircraft and being a war pilot. I went to the office to enlist so the officer said " you take your training in Hawai,you fly right now in a helicopter".

I boarded the helicopter and When the pilot said " Highlands at 9:30" the officer said " Ducks go to the water". I unloaded and the first officer gave me a litlle dog and said " Your training is difficult, you go to the jungle and live there for one year half and come back here with your dog. If the dog dies you never will be a marine. I started my adventure in the jungle, sometimes i didn't eat, only had the food to feed my dog. I had a good time in the jungle. When i came back the first officer congratulated me because i passed the first test. The second was the most dificult because it consisted of killing the dog with my bare hands. The officer gave me a knife. If i didn't kill my friend I never would find my objective to be a marine. I decided to kill my friend because I had family and at that time thought of the future of my family. now i am a war pilot. I have a wonderful family also i have a pet, a dog the same dog race as my best friend in my training.


I never forget that my best friend was a dog and I killed my best friend to be a marine. This is the most difficult decision in my messy life.

The most important thing(hong)

He was an ambitious person so he wanted to get a higher status in his company and he also desired activity in society therefore he made a group for taking picture.
Indeed, he had an appetite for family in result of he educated his children strictly in order to make them go right way.
But he didn’t care about his health.
Technically speaking, he couldn’t afford the time to take care about himself because he had a lot of tings to handle for living and his desire.
One day he got a deadly illness suddenly so he can’t help quitting everything, his job, his society group, his health and so on.
And then he regretted not taking care of his health but the time was too late.
He realized that health was most important thing than the things that he had done in society.

He is person close to me. I have been looking him since a long time ago so I could realize how much important health was.
If someone is unhealthy, he couldn’t be happy even though he had everything, money, beautiful wife, and honor like a above story.
We usually don’t care about our health beacuse it is easy to think that health is not a big deal beacuse we already have got it.
But when we lose our health, that time is too late to recover it.
Health already has gone out is we can’t return back.
Health is irreversible.
That’s other one of the reasons health is most important ting.

We do have to take care health first when we are helthy and then make other aims in life.
If you are healthy, you would be able to do everything!

Learnig more

The most important thing in my life is continuing to learn because I believe that people are born to learn something. This idea is from Buddha’s teaching, reincarnation. It means that people are born to learn and you can go to higher level in the next world than the this world. Learning something is sometimes fun and sometimes very hard but if you escape from the pain of learning, you could get less from your life and you would repeat the same level life in the next world.

I disliked to study in my school days. I did not study at home but did homework. I did not have purposes in my life and living without difficulty was my hope. As my parents desired, I went to go to University, spent time in vain. After I graduated from University, I became a newspaper reporter because it seemed a brilliant job.

However the job was so hard for me. I held the field of education and justice as soon as I join the company. I wrote articles about the baseball competition of High school, incidents, accidents and trials. I did not have enough knowledge about them, so, I took for a long time even though a small article.

Especially my reports of the baseball competition of High school were terrible. I am embarrassed as I remind about at that time. I was not interested in baseball and I did not know even which way a batter ran after he hit. Anyway, I had to write articles. I kept the score, took picture, asked another other newspaper’s reporter whom I should have interviewed. When I asked players some questions about a game, they were often confused and laughed because my questions were beside off the point. Not only did not I know about baseball rule, but also I did not know about baseball slang. They were like a code for me. I wrote articles somehow, but it was rewritten completely by my boss. “I want to quit the job now.” I thought.

The reports continued for 2 weeks, I was exhausted but I went on the work. I was accustomed keeping the score, taking pictures and interviewing day by day. Also, I made good relationships with players and I could bring out interesting information from them sometimes. I understood how they had used efforts for the competition and cheered them from my heart.

The last day, the final game was excited. It was a close game and I knew that all players fought tooth and nail. I concentrated and released shutters. When the game finished, I was stunned because I was impressed by the game.

The experiences made me realized that learning was wonderful. There are a lot of things to learn from family, friend and hobbies except jobs. I want to try learning more.

The valuable thing for me.

I'm going to introduce the most valuable thing for me. It's my experience. As you know, all Korean men must go the military. Also I did it. I learned many things in that place. While writing, I'm looking back into the past, and it seems to be a dream.

5 years ago, I was in the second year in my university. I liked to play some sports with my friends and traveled to the edge of my country. If I didn't have to do something, only then I studied a little bit. That is, I never thought about my future and I just enjoyed each day.

One day, I got one letter from the Military Manpower administration. Then I thought about the way to escape from military service. But there was no way. I was frustrated. Unbelievably, the time was too fast.

Eventually, I joined the army. There were no women in that place. It was not allowed not only to do any private action but also to talk back. Moreover, I couldn't endure the fact that I would live there for 28 months.

As I much could expect, it was a difficult time since I was born. One day went on, one month went on, the year went on...eventually 28 months went on.

During the time, I learned many things. Among them, nothing is so valuable as my family and Don't waste time. I still keep in mind these things and try to keep them in mind.

If I have a hard time, I will overcome it largely based on memories that during that time.

The girl who changed my life

It was raining all day long. One beautiful girl was standing against the wall to escapr the rain. She seemed like an angel come down from heaven at least to me. Her hair was wet, but not much. Although we got a few meters distance and there was heavy rain, I could smell her sweet perfume.

After I had gazed at her for a few minutes, she suddenly looked at me. I pretended not to see her, mt mind was shaking with emotion. But I didn't know why.

During the short moment, I thought so many things. Why did she look at me, what could I say her, even was it love at first sight? The more I saw her, the more beautiful and brilliant she became.

Taking courage, I said to her, "Hello," and, "Why are you standing here?. Then she started to open her mouth. She said to me,"I'm just escaping the rain. Would you share the umbrella" I was really happy. I couldn't believe that she give to me the chance. Of course I said to her,"sure." Possibly we were predestined to become close relationship.

Before I saw her, I didn't have any goal like my dream. But after I saw her, I followed her without any reasons. She used to spend the studying almost all time. So I studied with her, took a breathe with her. That is I did all things with her.

As a result of, I succesed to passing an examination that I really wanted, trying to more and more, I'm standing in N.Y

His first impression was not intense. He looked a typical American, tall, yellow hair, blue eyes, sharp and thin.
But one thing seemed to be different that was his sound. His voice was very calm and peaceful and his
pronunciation was not only clearer than other Americans, but also tender with small jokes.
Moreover he spoke slowly and used easy word to understand easily us.
So his sound made me thought him thoughtful and generous.

This is my first time I have studied at ELS in college so I afraid that teacher is very strict and speak very
fast and extreme traditional but he changed my first thought.
I tended to be shy and shame so I always didn’t ask anything even though I didn’t understand.
I know I was not a good student. I have been often late and sometimes I was absent.
Indeed I couldn’t do anything sometimes in class because of my personality or misunderstanding but he
took care of me and then led me to join the class. Some of teachers care only good students but he is
different.

So he is helping me adapt to study my first Laguardia semester.
When the thought that I didn’t want to go to school and studied came out in the morning, I tried to remand
him because I didn’t want him to be disappointed. I will be enthusiastic about studying English.
And I can feel that I am getting better day by day.

To Meet Him Was That I Got A Precious Experience

He has been a president of a company. His company is small but his business has been big. It is import sales. He gave a good experience to me.
This time is the third time that I have came to New York. After my second visit, I found a job to save money and thought of going to New York. Then I took a phone call from a president of the company.
We met first time when I was working in a souvenir shop. Our companionship was just trading partner. My company bought goods from him. Then we fraternized day by day.
After his call, I was going to work to his company. He knew that I wantedto go back to New York, even though he asked me, so I was able to save money and was able to know the business mecanisum. I appreciate him.

Last Wednesday I participated the funeral of BorisYeltsin. While I had known him for last eight years, he had made an effort toward two objectives, the Russian never again return to communism and that it makes a good partnership with the West.
He improved relationship among the former Soviet Republish and he made the Baltic state give up nuclear weapons. He also anticipated the group of 7 in his country's industrial future.
Although he had a lot of burden and he had heart problem, he had his trade mark bear hug and smile until the end. Although his successor Vladimir Putin was intelligent, he was not as comfortable with or committed to democracy as BorisYeltsin. BorisYeltsin was not perfect, but he was intelligent, passionate, emotional and strong-willed. Russia and the world were luck to have him.

Bill Clinton went to Yeltsin's funeral which was taken place in Moscow last week. He looked back how great role he played in changing the world.

Yeltin had two definite objectives; making sure that the Russian people returned to communism or autocratic ultra-nationalism and forming a solid, lasting partnership between a democratic Russia and the West.

At the beginning of their relationship, they had different opinions, but Clinton admired Yeltsin's job at the end of the day. Yeltin aboided returning to former Soviet and insisted on respecting Russia's borders with the other old Soviet republics. he also made a good relation ship with European country and succeeded to join the Group G7.

Although he played a great role, he lost he stepped down early because he resisted communist and he had health problems.

Clinton think that Yeltin wasn't perfect but he was intelligent, passionate, emotional, strong-willed and courageous and contributed to Russia's reform.

My Friend Who Changed My Pesonality

When she walked into the classroom, she was awe-inspiring. That day was entranceday in middle school. Her hairstyle was like a man's. It seemed that she was like a leader in the class.

After several days, I was interested in her. I wanted to be like her becaues I was very shy at that time. WHen I met a stranger, I didn't feel comfortable. And I didn't have self-confidence in front of people. I was with her over time, and I was changed by her. She was Min-jung, my best friend who later changed my personality.

Not only did she have leadership, but she was also smart. Moreover, she was popular among my classmates. We were getting to close, I was getting alike her. I realized that I could be active person. she was a class president, and I was a class vice-president. She was a perfact partner for me in the classroom. We were same class for 3 years. And then We went to school same high school. We were always popular among frinds for teenager. Becaues she was always with me.

Whenever I'm thinking of her, I really appreciate her for my teenager. That's why I was changed form passive person to active person.

After that, he stops his job as two reasons. First is heavy responsibilities and second is heart-attack. At the same time, he selected Vladimir Putin who had the diverse strong-points. Bill was impressed by president Putin at first but wasn't sure about him later. Because Putin wouldn't turn the clock back.

Bill saw Mr.Yeltsin one more time, last year before he died. He seemed in good health and did his job.

Boris Yeltsin was intelligent, passionate, emotional, strong-willed. At the end of cold war, World were lucky to have him. Although he died, History will remember him.

A young university student guy killed thirty-two people last week in Virginia Tech University. This fact was talked about by all people, because it was really a disappointing fact. A lot of students in Virginia Tech still were in shock over this situation.
The gunman bought a few weapons legally and he easily brought the guns into the school. In addition some of his guns were very special, such as assassination guns that X-Ray tools don’t catch.
The gunman made some videos himself and sent them to NBC TV before the action. He went to the dormitory at 7:30 A.M. and looked the door. He started to kill people during a hour period and the police came to school late. Finally, he killed thirty two people and himself.
I think this guy who never thought his life was mad. I don’t understand how he developed psychologically in his life because it was not easy to conceive this fact. I think that gun laws in America are really lenient. People can buy guns simply and the government doesn’t think what will happen at the end.
