Zhendong He My Own Situation

Since I came to NEW YORK, I have been changing a lot. I was a very bad student in China. I never came to the class, even the teacher who was teaching my major class, I didn`t know the name. I have been changing since I made my decision. I want to study, study English, culture, civelizition, etc.because all the times I go out, I don’t`t know what the other people are talking about. I feel I am a stupid man, don`t have any cognition. Because I always was absent from the school in China, when the people were talking about any thing about literature, I couldn`t understand. Some times I felt I couldn`t stand myself . I want to fix up this situation, want to study. Not only by doing it can I enrich myself, but it also can help my out of that poor situation. Even though I want to study, I still absent a lot and also received a letter from Laguardia. These days, I always been late because my girlfriend caught the flu five times in a month, even went to hospital! I always stayed with her until four or five o`clock in the morning because she couldn`t fall in to asleep, coughs all the daily and night. Any way, absence is absence, it is the turece, no excuse. As soon as the final test comes, I will five a hard shot on study. I don`t want to stay at the same level next semester. I hope I can get in to the next lever! Whatever , the inportent thing for me is studing English right now!

The biggest differece between Turkey and the USA is culture. When I first came here,I realize that there is a steep gap between American and Turkish culture .We think about andcare about others but many Americans do not.Whereas we act really carefully in public places but American act how they want.Although American culture is strange for me ,everybody in the world can get used easily. You don't have to make an effort the to get used because everybody is free in United States.I think, actually the USA is called free country.

Big Difference between the U.S.A and Korea

Shin, Yoong Ah
I have been living in New York for two months. Everything is new for me, so I feel very interested, but sometimes I’m confused by different life styles between the U.S.A and Korea. All systems in Korea are well-organized and rank-ordered, while in the U.S.A, people do as they want to do freely, for example, in the style of their clothing, the way of working and expressing their opinion, and so on. These behaviors effect their societies and also reflect their way of thinking.

LOST IN NEW YORK

One year ago, I didn’t know The New York city very well. I felt lost in the city. For me every place was new, but I wanted to know everything and be able to drive with certainly.

One day my uncle explained to me how to go to my other uncle’s house. I lived on Long Island and my other uncle lived in Queens. So my uncle said, “Are you sure that you can go there”, I said yes. Then after two hours driving I was lost and I didn’t want to call my uncle. I could arrive at my uncle’s Queens house because New York City has wonderful traffic signs.

That day I cried because a felt frustrated but at the same time I could compare my country with The United States. My country does have enough traffic signs for cases like this.

Right now, when I drive in New York city, I feel very sure and calm because I only have to pay attention at the traffic signs. I think this situation helped me and was a good experience for improving my driving in the crazy traffic of New York.

I remember my city, when I need to go to a specific place I had to take a taxi because I could find the address. I kwon my city very well but a think that I usually visited the same places.

Ring the bell, Mr. post

Shin, Yoong Ah

This is a real story that took place in New York. Olivia stayed at home all day, and finally she was up set. That’s because the parcel supposed to be delivered didn’t come, but a mail that the mailman had missed her had been put in the mail box without any phone number. She waited for it to be redelivered, but there was not any contact. She needed it right away, so she couldn’t do anything but, bring it by herself.

After that, another important mail was supposed to be delivered by express for her, so she stayed at home all day, and she was angry at night. There was just a “missed” mail in the mail box. Even worse, she couldn’t figure out even her name, because of such poor handwriting of the mail man.

The next day, she ran to the post office with the mail. The officer also couldn’t see the letter, and said that it was not for her. She couldn’t stand any more, and complained with shouting. Many customers there also felt like her. Everybody complained to officers. Confused officers tried to calm down people.

Service of the post office, however, is still poor.

My Dream Almost Done Reality

One time Ricky martin came to may job. I was surprised. That was incredible to me but I couldn’t leave there because I work in the kitchen. Even though I couldn’t do it, I went to the dinning room but he had been there only a few minutes so he wasn’t in the dinner room when I arrived. I was very sad about that. I don’t just like Ricky martin; I idolize him. This day my boss was angry with me for this episode but I didn’t care. I only thought about Ricky martin.

I have seen a homeless person on Times square but I have never met a homeless person in Turkey who looked like the homeless that was on Times square.
A little time went by after I saw him on Times square.I was really shocked because the homeless ,wrote on a paper, '' I need money for drug, beer and sex''.As soon as I saw that ,I wondered , What would happen if it took place in Turkey.I think not only would people critize him, but it also wouldn't be good for the public place and his health. We think that the homeless trick us because we really care about poor people.Whereas poor people can't live or survive easily,if somebody say,'' I need money for drugs, beer and sex'' in a public place, all of the nation would be against him and probably punish him.
Finally,I think that's a different point of view between two culture.

Behavior in Public: Japan and the United States

This report talks about that big behavior differences between The United State and Japan. The first point is Americans are individualistic while on the other hand Japanese are not. It shows this a concrete example which is that Americans choose their clothes freely without caring. They can wear torn jeans and T-shirts and people are dressed formally at the same place. In contrast, Japanese hardly ever see such a scene in Japan.
We can see abstract examples too, such as there are of age. Also the writer put here a personal experience about differences, and He tried to explain the possible reasons there are such differences. He says it is probably the country’s circumstances. For example, The United States is a big country and Japan is small. In the first one there are diverse cultures. In contrast, Japan is a single-ethnic. In the end, He concludes just sating, “I want to accept the good aspects of both.

Personality between Americans and Koreans

I have met some Americans so far. They were very active people and extroverted. But Korean are shy and calm. This is the difference of personality between Americans and Koreans. Americans communities can speak about everything but Korean communities can't. The person's personality is influenced by their country environment. For example, there was difference of class's atmosphere. In the U.S., many students speak their own voices in the class and participate freely because they think the teacher and students are equal and they respect opinions each other. On the other hand, In Korea, there is not an atmosphere of freedom in the class. As time goes by, Korea also intend to change from quite to active. However, Korean students are still quite in the class.

"My own New York Story"

New York, how great a place! Before I have been here I had dreamed about the wonderful world of N.Y. But one month later, I woke up from my dream. The subway is always crowded, broken and dirty. Moreover, there are so many Chinese and Koreans nearby the house which I live in. I came here to study English but everybody is Asian. Not only people who were born in N.Y. but too many people who came from other countries also live here. I didn't like this situation. I have to go outside to Manhattan to meet people who speak English. It made me annoyed. But one month later again, I adapted to this New York life. I started enjoying myself in New York. This city is a place in which various people who have different culture gather. I realized that here, I can not only study English ut I also can experience other various cultures.

The place I first visited alone in Manhattan was Chelsea. Unlike in Korea, there are so many individual galleries. In addition, the entrance fare is free! I felt the enthusiasm of artists at that place. In galleries, I also met a foreign person explaining the painting. I couldn't understand his whole explanation so I asked him over again. But he was never angry. In fact in Korea, if I were in this situation, the people who explained the picture must be angry. They was kind to me even though I couldn't understand their saying. I was impressed.

Also it is usual for people who have never met before to speak to each other. Koreans tend to dislike talking with strangers. Someday when I was going to school, the man who was going to work was talking to me. He said to me he was interested in Korea. We talked about respective culture in a subway for quite a long time. I couldn't speak English well like he who was born in N.Y. but we communicated. He encouraged me and said that I could do that. He didn't dislike talking to a stranger. At first, I thought it seemed strange. But now I have changed. I say hello to people that I don't know.

Moreover, I feel enormously comfortable and free. These people are individualistic so unless I ignore the law of N.Y, they don't care about me. Yesterday, I walked the street wearing sports wear, as for dancing, after my dance class. How ridiculous! But nobody cared about me. If I danced on the road in Korea, everybody may look at me and grin. I think it is just a culture difference.

Anyway, I am being a New Yorker and I adopted very well to this N.Y life. I am very happy that the chance was given to me to experience this life. I am getting to love New York even more now.

“ Behavior in New York and Korea”

03/03 Ann

When I came here, I felt a lot of freedom, unlike in Korea. There is a difference between Korea and N.Y. I think the biggest difference is the personality of people. Americans are individualistic and more patient than Korans. Actually, Korean care most about other people and are considerate of other’s feeling or point of view. They tend to behave like others.
This is an example. When I went to school, in New York, at first, I didn’t know what to wear. Because of my consideration of being seen by other people. I thought that if I wore strange clothes, they would think about me as a strange or ridiculous woman. Bit it was my mistaken though. Nobody cares about me. It was very strange. In Korea, many people gossip about other people who wear old-fashioned clothes or unique things. So people always care about other people, even their clothing or accessory.
Another difference is people’s patience. Koreans are well known as hurrying about anything. I was waiting for a bus. There was such a long line in front of a bus stop. The bus came. One people was riding on the bus but he didn’t prepare the bus fare before riding a bus. So I had to wait for him for a moment. I couldn’t understand and was upset. In Korea, most people prepare something before doing. In Korea, if I didn’t prepare my bus fare before riding a bus, people didn’t like me and were a little upset.

Find Childhood Dream-Jiyeon

There is a story about a girl who adored Martha Stewart. When she saw Martha, who is a professional about home deco, food, and so on through a TV show, she wanted to be like her. She thought, 'What can I do to be like her? ' Finally, she decided that she would ask her directly, but it seemed that it was very difficult because she lived in Korea. In addition, Martha Stewart was a very famous person, so she was very busy, and she didn't know the girl. However, she was too young to understand that situation. She thought that that was easy to meet her.
5 year later, she became a student in NYU. Actually, she didn't remember her decision. She just wanted to study in NYC, and she studied Business for getting a good job. She wasn't a girl anymore. She was an adult who knew her own present situation. Even though who wanted to be like Ms. Stewart, she knew it would be very difficult for her in that she didn't have any ability and expectation for herself. One day, her roommate applied to join the Martha Stewart Show accidentally, and then, she gained the chance, unexpectedly! As she took 2 tickets, who proposed to her roommate that they go together if who wanted. Suddenly, she could remember her past decision, so she went with her roommate. The studio was very large. A lot of joiners came there. The girl - even though she wasn't a girl anymore- was nervous because of expectation. When Martha came to the studio, the girl felt faint. Actually, she couldn't talk with Martha, but she could take an impression about the person who succeeded at her dream. It was such a shock that she took in NYC, U.S.A. Finally, she could gain self-confidence. I can't know how she would be, but I'm sure maybe she would be better than in the past. Actually, I was the roommate!!

A difference between New York and Bangkok

I came from Bangkok, which is the capital city of Thailand, to study English. There are many differences between New York and Bangkok, so I have to adapt the way of living and my opinion was changed by circumstances of New York, such as weather, culture, people, food, transportation and pollution.
The weather of Thailand is hotter and more humid than New York, There isn't snow in Thailand because it's located in a tropical area. I've just seen snow for the first time in my life.
In Thailand, younger people have to repest older people but the people in USA respect those who have more ability. Thai food is very spicy and has a lot of herbs. I don't know what the real american food is. I prefer Thai food and in my opinion Thai food is the best.
The New York sub way and bus networks are extensive, especially in Manhattan. It's also the quickest way to get around. On the other hand in Bangkok there is really a lot of traffic and less public transportation. I'd rather travel in New York than in Bangkok.
In conclusion, I love New York because it isn't only the largest city in the world but it's also the most convenient city. However, I really miss my country each time I breath. It's my home town.

Art

MOMA ASSAULT

This happened the night of December 28 2007 in the MOMA museum of New York. At around 7 pm when the museum was closing, two guys using masks intended pass the security of it. They menaced the door man with guns and tried to open a security box where the most precios pice of art around the world are kept, valuated at more than $100.000.000.000, but fortunately they took too much time putting in the acces PIN and the police could get there fast and captured them. Now the museum is reevaluating the safety measures because they think that these guys not only got secret information but also they had someone who helped them to get it and this person has to be a worker from the museum, so nowdays the administration is more carefull about the security department.

My history

My story took place in Pennsylwania in 2006.
There is a very nice big camp in a forest -Promiced Land. Every summer with my family we have o good time in this beautiful place. This time we relaxed too, when at one moment heard from the tents two bears had come .Everyone was confused. My wife was afraid about children.
We did not know that other people had given food before.
My son was very happy. He saw bears for the first time.We gave foods them and bears went away.
The next day we gave information to the Park Office. Men told us "Dont feed animals ,Dont feed animals".
J asked him What can we do if the situation repeats. He gave me answer: "You can onlylook and wait for the bears to go away".
J asked one more time:"We must stay{wait} all night ?
He told me:Yes , you must. This is State Park.
OK.

MY FIRST TIME IN NEW YORK

Sonia Bermudez

It was the winter of 1988.I took a train from Edgewater park in New Jersey, just to come to the Colombian Embassy to renew my passport. I didn't figure out how intense this day would be to me. First I was almost frozen, the landscape looked very sad. Nobody said a single word, may be everybody was like mummified probably thinking of their own problems. At 9:00 o clock I arrived at 42nd street station. I started to walk in a dark hall filled with all the kind of musicians and sellers. Of course the temperature was like being in a kitchen and the passengers ran like ants in all directions. Finally I got the horrendous red wagon very similar to the "Hitler time", carrying prisoners to the "Auschwitz ghetto". I had never imagine seeing the world capital city using this old fashion machines.
Second, the ambiance underwent a magical metamorphosis when I got outside I found 5th Avenue covered by snow. I walked at least three blocks and I stopped in front of the simple building with the national flag very deteriorated by the pollution. The place was very crowded because Omar Rayo, one of the most important painters of my country was visiting the Colombian colony and making an exhibition of his last works. All the attention public offices were closed. I lost my time but met a lot of my colleagues and some friends from Colombia. After that we shared in a Mexican restaurant where the owner was a Colombian gay. I ended the day in a home's friend in Queens. I saw many different thing that i had never imagine existed in this country.

Unforgettable Experiences!!!

During the last seven years I have been coming to New York. Every year I was visiting my mother in summertime and each time was amazing and unforgettable. My mother and I enjoyed many experiences together and now when we remember them we laugh. Moreover, each moment left an important message of life in our lives.
Almost five years ago, it was time to go back to Colombia because it was enough vacations for me and I had to keep going to school. My flight took off at 7:00 am and I was supposed to be at JFK airport three hours beforehand. I was in good time; but while my aunt was taking out the suitcases to the lobby of the building to put them in the car, someone got them. When my mother went out of the apartment, she did not see them.
"Oh my goodness!" she said. "It has been stolen!" My mother, my aunt and I looked for them all over the building and we could not find them. Just then, some neighbor came and asked us that what was going on and he help us. After many minutes, he found a man who has them, and that guy told us that he had found them outside an apartment on the seventh floor. Obviously, we did not believe him but we were thankful to that man. My suitcases were opened but everything was in there.
Even so, I was very late at the time. Everybody was anxious and stressed because my flight almost left without me.
That experience was unforgettable for us but the most important point was we learnt a message of life... We can not trust everybody and think they are like us!!!

Behavior in New York and Korea- Jiyeon

This morning, I was going to school with my friend. When we got on the subway, we tried to sit. Then, a man told my friend about that, and then, they were friends. I couldn't believe it. It was so strange because I thought that it might take a long time to make friends. Moreover, they met only the first time! However, he spoke as if she'd been his friend for a long time. Actually in Korea, it was an unusual event except in the case of falling in love! I've heard stories like this in NYC, so I make a conclusion. Americans are easier to approach than Koreans are; Sociable. No matter how funny thing it is, we just laugh in side when we see a person who we've never ever met, but Americans always greet each other even though they meet at first. it is a very different situation.

While I Walk in Manhattan...

Sandy.

I have been living in New York for over a year. In my first plan, I was supposed to be in Korea now. I might be thrilled about starting the semester at my university and I also might be busy. However, I'm still in New York. Why do humans live following the time? The time gives all to people the same day. However, people spend their time by daily schedule. It's extremely different, like the differnces of people's faces.

Yesterday, I strolled in Manhattan alone. I walked on Broadway and Union Square and then I looked at strangers on the street without thinking. And I looked up at many high buildings and I also looked up at the sky. I asked myself, "What do you want in your mind? What is the important thing in your life? Why are you living here now?"
While I was walking around, I realized that I've been busy and I thought I lived hard but I had missed some important thinking for a long time. These days I was depressed and there was darkness in my mind because I didn't like my life especially lately.
Strangely, when I walked in Manhattan, I was happy. There was nothing changed. By the way I just was thankful about being alive in the present and being able to move everywhere. At that time, I wanted to shout this, "I'm still in New York. I can start again!" Actually, I couldn't do that because many people might think that she was crazy. I felt very glad because I'm living here and I have my future in New York.

Behavior in public: Japan & the U.S

She shows the readers the big difference of the two countries's attitude, individualistic and a standard of the group by giving a concrete example of it which is to wear the cloths and an abstract one which is age. She also has her own experience of a situation in public. However, she is optimistic by taking the advantage of the difference.
