some comments on Stefania's posted conversation

Stefania,

You have written a coherent conversation. The questions and answers flow smoothly from beginning to end. I've added some comments about the writing.

T: Hey! How are you?
A: I'm good and you?

This is correct, but the answer should be 2 sentences, separated by a period and a capital letter.

T: Great. How long did it take you to your interchange?

Remember that the form is: How long did it take you to+ VERB.

"Your interchange" is not a VERB. It's a NOUN.

The correct verb could be "do"

"How long did it take you to do your interchange?"

A: It took me 1 year.

The answer is correct.

But the meaning of "interchange" is not clear. I think you mean "exchange studies" (where somebody studies and lives in another country while a student from that country comes to theirs).

Note: In "exchange studies," "studies" is a NOUN (plural).

T: Cool. How was the experience?
A: Amazing! There are many things to do.

Question and answer are correct. The PRESENT TENSE "there are" can be correct because the things you are talking about continue to exist.

T: How long did it take you to learn French?
A: It took me 4 months. What about you? How long did it take you to your interchange?

The question here has the same error as the first one.

T: It took me 1 year as well.

This answer is correct. A: How long did it take you to learn English?
T: It took me 3 months. I learned very fast.

Both question and answer have no errors. A: Wow! Yes, super fast. Well nice to talk with you, see you later.

Punctuation errors are in this sentence. It needs a COMMA (,) after "Well" and "Well, nice to talk to you. See you later" is 2 sentences. They have to be separated by a PERIOD (.) and a CAPITAL LETTER.

T: Ok. Nice to talk with you too. Bye
A: Bye

That's correct.

Ok. Nice to read this. Bye.

Notes on K.Sirikorn's post

Sirikorn,

It is good to have your post here. Please look at the notes about it I have written below.

Summary about "Daydreaming"

The research says daydreaming is a sign of unhappiness, and shown a human mind is a wandering mind, and a wandering mind is an unhappy mind. Mostly American people beings spend a lot of time thinking about what is not going on around them, contemplating events that happened in the past, might happen in the future or will never happen at all.

"Shown" is incorrect, because the summary is in the PRESENT TENSE. "Shows" is correct. "Mostly American people spend a lot of time" is correct, but I think you meant "Most American people." Both are correct.

Otherwise, the summary is all correct.

writing a short conversation

1) A: How long did the flight from Bangkok to New York last ?
B: It last around 20 hours.

The question is correct, but the VERB in the answer has to be PAST TENSE.
2) A: How long does it take by train from your house to school?
B: It take 30 minutes by train from my house to school.

That's correct. "How long does it take to go by train from your house to school" is also correct. It is possible to omit "to go," as you did correctly.
3) A: How long does it take to learn this course(Fall 2012)?
    B: It take 3 months.

The grammar is correct, but I think the VERB should be different. "Complete" is better here than "learn."
4) A: How long did you cleaned your bedroom last?
    B: It last 2 weeks.

Here the question form is : How long did it take (you) + to verb.

The correction is "How long did it take you to clean your bedroom?"

The correct answer is: "It took (me) 2 weeks."

5) A: How long did the Metro card valid last?
    B: It last 1 month.

I think these sentences need PRESENT TENSE because it's about the Metro card every day, not the Metro card last week (for example).

Remember, the form is: How long+ NOUN + last.

"the Metro card valid" is not a NOUN, but you can change it to a noun by changing the adjective VALID to the noun form "VALIDITY."

The correct question is then "How long does the Metro card validity last?" That's correct, but it sounds strange. A simple question may be better: How long is the Metro card valid?"

Remember to put "s" on the end of the VERB in the PRESENT TENSE after "he," "she" or "it." ("It lasts").

Notes on Ibrahim's post

"Ibrahim,

Thanks for posting your conversation here. I've written some notes about it below.

A:How long does it  take you to get from your home to the subway ?
 B:It takes me 2 minutes.

That's correct.
How long last match you went last? A:
B:It lastes  3 months.

When you make a PAST TENSE QUESTION, you need DID+SUBJECT+VERB BASE FORM (the BASE FORM is the dictionary form of the verb, without "ing," "ed," etc. The BASE FORM of "last" is "last." You used it correctly.

The SUBJECT of your question should be "the last match you went to" or "the last match you attended."

Your answer has a problem with the VERB. It should be "LASTED." Maybe you just mis-typed.
A: How long does it take you to call your parents ?
B: It takes me  one hours.

That's correct, but there is a small error. "One hour" (not "one hours") is correct.
How long did your meet with your parents last? A:
B:It lasted me 2 weeks.

The form is "How long + did+ SUBJECT+ last?

The SUBJECT is always a NOUN.

"Your meet with parents" is not a noun.

You can change a VERB to a NOUN with "ing."

"Your meeting with your parents" is a NOUN and can be the SUBJECT.

So the correct question is "How long did your meeting with your parents last?"

In the answer, omit "me."
A:How long does it take you to cook your lunch?
B: it takes me 1 hour.

Both question and answer are correct.

A: How long does you take to do your home work ?
B: It takes me one hour.

The answer is correct, but the question is not.

Remember, this form is "How long- does/did it take (you) to VERB?"

You can fix that.

A: How long  did this home work take ?
it took me half hour.

This question has the same error. You can fix it.

A: How long did the bus late yestarday?
B:it late 20 minutes.

This is a different kind of question. "How long" should change to "How late."

The correct question is "How late was the bus yesterday?" and the answer is "It was 20 minutes late."
How long did you meet your friends last?
 It lasted 5 hour.

This has the same error as the question about meeting with parents.

Change "you meet your friends" to "your meeting with your friends." Then it's a NOUN and you can use it as the SUBJECT of the sentence:

How long+ SUBJECT+ last?

"How long did your meeting with your friends last?"

A: How long did you clean your bedroom last?
    B: It lastes 2 days .

Here you can make a correct SUBJECT by changing "you clean your bedroom" to "your cleaning your bedroom," but I think a better question is with the other form:

How long+ did it take (you) to+ VERB?

"How long did it take you to clean your bedroom?

"It took me 2 days."

And remember, "lastes" is incorrect. You can write the PAST TENSE ("lasted") or PRESENT TENSE with "he," "she" or "it" ('lasted').

comments on Mahamadou's post

Mahamadou,

Thanks for your post and for your participation in class. I've made some notes about the conversation you wrote. They are between the lines.

Mahamadou Diawara
A: how long it take you to get to school every day
B: it take me one hour

Yes, we talked about this in class today.  The question needs "does" and the answers needs "s" after take ("takes").

In the present tense, there is always an "s' after the verb if the SUBJECT of the sentence is "he, she or it."

So the correction is:

How long does it take you to get to school every day?

It takes me one hour.

A: how long  it take you to read a new paper
B: it take me 15 minute to read a new paper
A: how it take you to send an email
B: it take me 5 minute

The two questions and answers above have the same problem. You can fix them.

A:how long did it take to do your last home work
B: it took me 30 minute

This is correct. It's past tense and you correctly used "did."

There is one small error. "5 minute" should be "5 minutes."

Also, all your sentences need PUNCTUATION. Put a QUESTION MARK (?) at the end of questions and a PERIOD (.) at the end of STATEMENTS (sentences that are not questions). You probably just forgot that, but it is good to remember it, make it a habit to improve your writing.
B:and you tell how long lasted your last break fast
A: it lasted 10 minute

When you make a REQUEST (for example, "Please open the window") don't use "you" (Please you open the window" is incorrect).

In English, the WORD ORDER is SUBJECT+ VERB.

"your last breakfast" is the SUBJECT and "lasted" is the VERB,

so the correct sentence is "And please tell how long your last breakfast lasted."

Remember the "s" for PLURAL (10 minutes)

B:  about your last shower, how long did it lasted
A: it lasted 20minute

After "did," the VERB is always BASE  FORM (the BASE FORM is the form in the dictionary, without ING, ED or S, etc.)

The BASE FORM of the VERB in your sentence is "LAST"

So the correct sentence is "About your shower, how long did it last?"

The answer you wrote is correct, but "twenty minutes" is PLURAL and needs an "s."

B: how long it lasts you to call your girl friend
A: it lasts me 4hour

The form here is: How long did + NOUN+ last.

"you to call your girlfriend" is not a NOUN, but we can make it a NOUN: "your call to your girlfriend."

How long did+ your call to your girlfriend+ last? That's correct.

The answer should also be PAST TENSE and "me" is not necessary.

The correct form is: It lasted 4 hours (remember the "s").

Also, you should separate 4 hours (not "4hours") and "20 minutes"  (not "20minutes")

B:  about your family how long it lasts you to call them
A: just 2 hours

This question has the same problem and you can fix it. Remember to put "to" between "call" and "them." The NOUN is "your last call to them."

notes on Jirayu's post

 Jirayu,

Your written conversation is almost completely correct. I've made some notes on errors between your sentences.

How long did you play the computer last night?
I played it for 2 hours.

That grammar is correct, but I think you need a PREPOSITION, "on."

"How long did you play on the computer last night?"

"I played on it for 2 hours."

How long did you work for yesterday?
I worked for 10 hours.

Both question and answer are correct.

How long dose it take to fly from Thailand To USA.?
It takes 25 hours to fly.

The question and answer are correct, but "does" is incorrectly spelled.

How long dose Newyork  have the subway?
Newyork has subway for 100year already.

This has 4 errors.

1. The grammar should be PRESENT PERFECT (have+ past participle)

2. New York is 2 separate words.

3. "Does" is the correct spelling

4. "100 year" should be "100 years")

How long did you take the subway ?
I took the subway for 30 minutes.

That's correct.

How long did you meet your friend for dinner?
I met them for 2 hours at dinner.

Correct, but "friend" is incorrect. It should be "friends" because the answer has "them."

How long did you go shopping  yesterday ?
I want shopping for 1 hours.

This is correct, but it should be "1 hour," not plural.

comments on Gil Ju's Post

 Gil Ju,

Thanks for posting this summary of the article. The main ideas are correct. There are some errors in the grammar. Most are about PREPOSITIONS (in, on, of, from, by etc.) I've made some comments below.

This article was written to school data compliled during two students a they daydreaming . The people spend too much time thinking about they daydreames. which don't be come reality .
it is important to image what i will be in the future .

The article was written FROM schoo data compiled ABOUT students daydreaming. People spend too much time thinking about THEIR daydreams, which don't become reality. It is important to imagine what I will be in the future.

There were only 3 grammar errors. The others were spelling ("compiled" and "daydreamers").

Comments on Aleyda's post

 Aleyda,

Lets' look at the conversation you wrote. At first glance, it looks fine. I don't see a lot of errors. But let's look more closely.

R: Hi! How are you?
A:Hi, I am good.

That's correct.

R: How about you?
     I am fine.
How long did take your most  recent vacation last?

The question here has problems.

The form we used in class would be: "How long did the last vacation you took take?" That's grammatically correct, but it sounds strange. The grammar doesn't really fit the question. A better way would be simply: "How long was your last vacation?"

A: It lasted 2 weeks
I was the most memorable vacation

The answer is correct. But "It was the most memorable vacation" could use some more information. for example, "It was the most memorable vacation in my life." That's clearer.

R: Where did you go?
A: I went to Italy, the places I visited are Rome, Venice, and Florence.

This is correct (both question and answer), but after Italy you need a period (.), not a comma (,) because there are two separate sentences.

Rome is the capital o modern Italy. It is full of history everywhere you look.
     Rome has interesting medieval churches.

Those two are completely correct, Aleyda.

Venice is a unique city built on water, it is one of Italy's most beautiful and romantic cities.

Florence is one of the most important renaissance architectural and art centers.

The trip was amazing and remarkable.

The 3 sentences above also have no errors.

R: I am so happy for you.
How long did it take you decided place to visit?

This has a problem. You have to use "take you to + VERB. After "to" you have to use BASE FORM OF THE VERB (no "ed" or "ing" or anything at the end. So it should be "How long did it take you TO DECIDE.." And "place needs an DIRECT ARTICLE (the) or INDIRECT ARTICLE (a). The correction is "a place to visit" or "the place to visit."

A:It took me and my husband 1 week.

That's correct.

R: How long did it take you and your husband to planned that trip?

This one has the same error as in the question before. You can fix it ("to + VERB BASE FORM)

A:   It took us 3 months.
We decided together the places to went...

Remember, after "to" you always have to use VERB BASE FORM, so the correction here is "to go."

Nice to see you, I will get off from bus next stop

This sentence needs a PREPOSITIONAL PHRASE, "at the next stop."

And before bus there should be no PREPOSITION "from," only a DIRECT ARTICLE ("get off the bus" is the correction. Notice that in this case "off" is not a preposition. It is part of the TWO-WORD VERB "get off."

R: ok... Nice to see you too, I will see you later.

This is a very minor point, but the "o" in "ok" should be capitalized because it is the beginning of the sentence.

notes on Preeyaphat's summary

Preeyaphat,

I've looked at the summary you wrote about the article about daydreaming. It has no grammatical errors and accurately gives the main points of the article. Nice work. Now let's work on pronunciation of "ubiquitous"!

Summary of article:
Research was done at Harvard University about daydreaming.  We spend nearly half of our waking hours daydreaming, and it is a sign of unhappiness.  Participants in the research got an iPhone app and sent 250,000 messages.  Mind wandering is also ubiquitous across all activities that we do, so no matter what we're doing, we always daydream.  In conclusion, daydreaming is one of the things that makes us human, because other animals never think about what is not going on around them.

Mary and Sophia's Date
Mary : How long did the last performance you went to last
Sophia: It lasted 3 hours
Mary : woow that's interesting and how long did it take you to get from park to theatre?
Sophia: It took me 10 minutes to get from park to theatre, I thinking to go to watch a movie.
Do you want to go with me?
Mary : yes, I will like too.
Sophia: How long did the last movie you saw last?
Mary : It lasted 1:45
Sophia: How long did it take you to buy the tickets?
Mary : It took me 5 minutes. I bought online.
Sophia: So, I see you this friday?
Mary : It's ok.. Bye
Sophia: Bye

Brenda,

You created a drama with characters. They even have names.

These are some notes about the writing:

Mary's first question has correct grammar, and so does Sophia's answer.

In Mary's next line, "Wow" is usually spelled with just one "o" (but maybe you meant to give more emotional impact by making it double "o").

"Park" and "theatre" need DEFINITE ARTICLES. It should be "the park" and "the theatre."

The INDEFINITE ARTICLE "a" is correct in "a movie" because we don't know which movie.

But the correct construction before that is "be + thinking+ of + VERB+ing"

(I'm thinking of going to a movie).

"I would like to" is correct. "I will like to" is incorrect.

For invitation questions and answers, the polite form is this:

"Would you like to + VERB (base form)?

"Yes, I would like to (or just "Yes, I would.")

BASE FORM is the dictionary form of the verb, with no conjugation (no ing, ed, s, etc.) For example, the base form of "took" is "take" and the base form of "was" is "be."

Everything else is correct until "I bought online."

"Buy" is a TRANSITIVE VERB, which must have an OBJECT.

"I bought them online" is correct. "Bought" is the OBJECT."

INTRANSITIVE VERBS don't need an OBJECT. For example, "rain" is an INTRANSITIVE VERB, so you can say "It's raining," which has no OBJECT.

"I see you this Friday" is future, so it should be "I will see you this Friday." In conversation, people usually shorten "I will" to "I'll).

Finally, "It's okay" is grammatically correct, but the meaning is wrong.

"It's okay" comes after an apology and means "Don't worry about it."

For example:

"Sorry I'm late."

"It's okay" (or "That's okay").

In your conversation, the correct sentence is just "Okay."

notes on Iraz' post

Iraz,

The two grammatical forms are similar but we use them differently. In this conversation, you have used them correctly. Errors are minor. I have noted them below your conversation.

1. A: How long did it take you to fly from your country to NY?
B: It took me ten hours.
2. A: How long does it take you to go to sleep?
B: It takes me fiftteen minues.
3. A: How long does it take you to be prepared everymorning?
B: It takes me twenty minutes.
4. A: How long does it take you to do laundry?
B: It took me one and half hour.
5. A: How long did the last book you to read last?
    B: It lasted three days.
6. A How long did the last meeting last?
    B: It lasted one hours.
7. A: How long did it take you to go to university last?
B: It took me four years.
8. A: How long did the last concert you went to last?
    B: It lasted three hours.
9. A: How long did the last relationship last?
    B: It lasted two years.

"Fifteen" is misspelled.

In 4, the question is present tense, but the answer is past tense.

In 5, "to" should be omitted.

In 6, "hour" is singular.

The question in number 7 mixes the two forms incorrectly.

Form 1. How long did your university education last?

Answer: It lasted four years.

Form  2: How long did it take you to complete your university education?

Answer: It took me four years.

Both the question and the answer of 8  are correct.

Number 9 is grammatically correct but a little confusing. Which relationship is A asking about? Her relationship? The relationship of friends?

comments on Servando's post

Servando,

I'm glad you decided to post a summary of the article. It is not an easy one and summarizing it is hard, but that's the kind of reading and writing you will need to do in college.

I've written some comments about your summary below it.

A new research realized in Harvard University, shows people spend half of their time daydreaming, and they say that their mind wandering is a sign of unhappiness. Over 2200 volunteers participated in this publishing, and they downloaded an iPhone app, where they sent more than 250000 messages during 24 hours. This research concludes that us spend more than 46% of our waking hours thinking in our past, and the researchers said, we are a unhappy mind.

"Research" is not countable- you can't say "one research, two researches, three researches"- so "a research" is incorrect. It should just be "research."

250000 needs a COMMA ("250,000")

Your sentences have correct structure.

There's an error in the last one.  The form is this: THAT + SUBJECT PRONOUN+ VERB , but "us" is not a SUBJECT PRONOUN. It is an "OBJECT PRONOUN. The SUBJECT PRONOUN is "we." So the correct form is:

"that we spend more than..."

I think the error is because the article had "Most of us spend...." In that case, "us" is correct, because it is the OBJECT of the preposition "of."

Speaking of prepositions, "thinking in our past" should be "thinking of our past." Prepositions in English (of, in, on, etc.) are difficult. You will gradually remember how to use them correctly.

"We are a unhappy mind" could be "we have unhappy minds" (plural of "mind") or- better, I think, "our minds are unhappy."

Anyway, the large structural elements of the summary are correct.
