Martha has overtaken Claudia to become the best English speaker in New York City's Laguardia Community College.
This is according to the teacher Kevin, who compiles his annual
TOP 10 ranking of the school's most fluent speakers. Martha's
pronunciation is estimated to be correct 90% of the time. Claudia had occupied
the top spot for the previous four Saturdays. Martha's new ranking
consolidates her position as the top-learning student in the English
Language Center. Her improvement is due to her everyday grammar
practice, watching TV in English, and reading and listening to English
on-line. She entered the
college a month ago and has become one of the best English speakers in
the class.
Kevin
teaches courses across the college, giving instruction on everything
from reading to conversation. He calculates students progress by analyzing several
factors, including the development of vocabulary, accuracy of
pronunciation and prospects for future growth. Martha' s English
ability has grown remarkably in the past month with a series of hugely
successful homework assignments and intensive participation in class
discussions. Her English proficiency has increased since the class began in April,
2012. Kevin emphasized that Martha's success was due
to her dedication and maturity
as a person. She uses her time in class intelligently and is active,
like the rest of this remarkable group of students. Kevin said Martha
had succeeded in becoming a top learner, making her English more
effective by increasing her confidence, her skill and courage to
communicate in any situation.
