Statistics show the prevalence of the nuclear family and it is permutations. In 1985, there was one divorce for every two marries. Not only did the number of families maintained by women only more than double between 1960-1985 but the median income of families also headed by single mothers is less than 50% of intact families. Moreover, the majority of divorced people remarry, so most children live with two parents either natural or blended family. In addition, there are five married families for every led by a single parent.

The nuclear family has clear historical origins. First immigrants were from Britain where the nuclear family is common and immigrants, especially the second and third generation, because Americanized and adopt the value of the general society. Furthermore, when parents moved west, the journey was dangerous, so they brought only wife and children. In addition, people from cultures, where extended families are common then to leave the older generation behind when they immigrate.

Social and economic factors have influenced the family in the U.S. It is economically possible for family members to main separate households. Not only did older people tend to be well-off and like to pursue their own careers. But young people also encouraged leave home early. Moreover, independence is a natural value for America people.
