The statistic information shows the prevalence of the nuclear family and its

permutations.In 1985 there was one divorce for every two marries.The number of family

maintained by women only more than doubled between 1960-1985. The median in

come of families needed by single mothers is less than 50 % of intact families. The

majority of divorced people remarry , so most children live with two parents either a

natural or blended family. There are 5 married families for every on led by a single

The nuclear family has clear historical origins.First immigrations were from Britain

,where the nuclear family is common. Immigrations especially the 2nd and 3rd generations

become Americanized and adopt the values of the general society. When pioneers moved

west ,the journey was dangerous, so they brought only wife and children. People from

cultures where extended families are common tend to leave the older generation behind

when they are immigrant.

Social and economic factories have influenced the family in the in the U.S. It is

economically possible for family members to main separate households. Older

people tend to be well-off and like to purse their own interests . Middle aged women

often return to school to begin new careers. Young people are encouraged to leave home

early. Independence is a natural value for American people.
