reply to Hui Chung's post

Hui Chung,

The conversation you wrote is  mostly correct. I've made some suggestions under it.

A: How long did your last romance last?
B: It lasted one year.
A: Why were you gays broke up?
B: Because I couldn’t trusted him.
A: How long did you couldn’t trusted him last?
B: It lasted a half year.
A: So how long did it take you to decide to break up?
B: It took me about one month to get  the decision.

-"break up" is a verb, so the correct question is "Why did you guys break up?" (spelling is "guy," unless you mean gay).

-Remember, after "could" you have to use "base form" of the verb (base form is the one in the dictionary, with no ing, ed, s or anything else at the end), so the correct answer is "Because I couldn't TRUST him."

By the way, you also use only the "base form" after "will, can, do, must, should" etc.

-The form of the question is: How long did +NOUN+ last. "You couldn't trust him" is not a NOUN, but you can make it a NOUN with ING. But "couldn't trusting him" is not correct because you can't use ING after "could." So the only correct form is "your not being able to trust him." That means "you couldn't trust him" but is a NOUN.

The correct question is: "How long did your not being able to trust him last?"

Your answer is correct.

And your last question and answer are both correct.
