Christian's story

How old is Christian and where is he from?
He is fifteen and from Mexico.
What is his main problem?
It is not having documentation to live and work in this country.
Where did he work last summer?
He worked in clothing factory and really didn't like it.
What has he been searching for?
He has been searching for a way to get legal residency.
What did he think might be the key to citizenship?
He thought joining the military might be the key.
What does he see every morning when he takes the bus to school.
He sees men lined up waiting for "day labor," and the view makes him very depressed.
Does Christian know any of the men waiting outside for work?
Yes, he knows one, his step father.
What doesn't he want to spend the rest of his life doing?
He doesn't want to spend it doing unskilled labor, such as breaking concrete or working in a clothing factory.
What does Christian want to do in the future?
He wants to become an engineer or an archaeologist and study his ancestors, the Aztecs.
When and how did Christian come to the United States?
He came when he was a baby by crossing the border with his mother.
Does he remember Spanish now?
No, he doesn't, because he grew up speaking English.
Four years from now, what will Christian's friends be doing? At the same time, what two choices will Christian have?
His friends will be graduating from college. Christian's two choices will be to work "off the books" or to go back to Mexico, where he doesn't have any connection.
Why was Christian's cousin Mikey thinking about joining the military?
He was thinking about it because it might be a way to become a citizen.

We don't know his name because he is afraid of being discovered by Immigration.
