Good news for airline travelers!

The U.S. Transportation Department's new rules include: tarmac delay, bag fee refunds, getting bumped, advertising. The passenger-protection regulations will take effect in four months.

Yes, Marina, these new rules have just come into effect. The most important may be the bag fee refunds. Now passengers have to pay to bring large bags onto an airplane. In the past, it was free. If the airline loses the bag, it should refund the money.

The tarmac delay rule is important too. In some cases, passengers were kept waiting inside an airplane on the runway for 11 hours. That really isn't fair. I think the limit now is 3 hours (still a long time!)

Marina,

Rereading your message, I discover there is a mistake in my comment. I wrote that "these new rules have just come into effect." That's wrong. As you wrote, "the passenger-protection regulations will take effect in four months."

Next time, I will read more carefully.
