Homework

Next week is our last week. We will probably watch "Little Miss Sunshine" and food is very welcome, of course.

The homework is simple. Please prepare to talk about one true story from your life, an adventure. A travel story or a work story or a ghost story, any kind of story is welcome. Something that happened in your life will interest and educate your classmates.

Next Saturday students will tell their stories in groups. Some stories will be told again in front of the class.

3 Minute Speeches

While you wait to give your 3 minute speech and after you finish it,

you should write about your speech topic on the blog

Jackie's topic

I am going to talk about a young teacher whose name is Zheng and who has been teaching Chinese in high school in Oklahoma.
Zheng is learning a few things herself about America culture. I think she has been experiencing a lot of culture shock. One thing that took her aback is that in China if you teach the students and they don't get it, you teach it again. She can see that the culture of America school is different. For instance, here students lead more interesting lives, partly because they are more involved in athletic, choir and other activities. In China, they study and study and study. She sees too that in America the teachers get little respect, becouse the students disrupted classes by speaking then the whole class laughs.Another difference from china is that this country doesn't value teachers. Teachers don't earn much in china either, but there it's very honorable career.
In conclude Zheng think this country is so different from her own.She can teach a lot and really get to know this country and culture well.

my speech topic [dance] toya

I will be talking about dance.
I`m really interested in dance.
dance is difficult to understand because these days, dance is entertainment.
A long time ago some people danced with various purposes such as expressing love or giving a curse.
people dance to express their feelings. i agree with this opinion. for example, on the street. i feel good when i listening to music. sometimes,i danced on the street.
Anyway, each nation has different styles of dance because it has some tradition, history
and culture.
older generations formed our dance history. It is important that we understand the music of our ancestors because dance and history are linked.

Geovanna Morales

I going to talk about my childhood. I lived in Quito, Ecuador with my parents and two sisters. We lived in grandmother's house. The name of the neighboorhood is San Bartolo. It is located in the south of Quito. I had a good relation with my family, and we shared happy moments all the time.

I remember when I was 4 years old, my mother baked vanilla cookies. She gave me a piece of bread dough, and I made many animals shapes. I smelt the vanilla throughout the house. My grandparents came to my house, and everybody drank tea or coffee with cookies. I also remember when I was 5 years old, I went to my kindergarden with my uncle. We rode on his motorcycle. I felt like we were flying. He bought me peach juice and a sandwich with cheese. He always wore a suit because he had to go to his job. He told me good bye, and I went to my classroom. I also remember when I was 6 years old, the grandmother's house was located in front of train station. My grandmother permmitted me to go to Aloag in a train. When I arrived at the farm in Aloag, I jumped rope, ran on the grass and collected yellow flowers and pink fruits. I enjoyed playing with others children. When I came back home, my father was very worried because I went without his permission.

I felt nostalgia and kept my memories in my heart.

Toya, this is the correction of your original story:

You wrote it in the present tense. I recommend you write it again in the past tense.

Three minute speeches

Your three minute speeches will give me a chance to hear you speak and evaluate your progress this semester.

Because of room changes, it's still not sure if you will talk in front of the class or just with me. In both cases, you should choose an interesting topic.

You can't read your speech and you shouldn't memorize it. Just practice at home and organize your ideas.

Something else to remember: Since we have a lot of students, you really have just three minutes to talk. If you talk too long, I will, with apologies, interrupt. Please prepare well.

Good luck!

There were two birds in the living room of the small apartment. The man and wife who lived in the apartment didn´t know where the birds came from or how they got in the apartment. They where flying in circles. One was blue with a white crest and the other was dark brown with a light brown stomach. The husband and wife wanted to eat their dinner but they couldn´t whit the two birds flying in the living room. They wanted the birds get out but they couldn´t catch them. The wife suggested to the husband that he call 911. He said that wasn´t necessary. He was very hungry and suggested they eat the birds.

Oliva, there are only two minor errors here.

1. spelling ("with" not "whit"- I think you just typed it that way by mistake).

2. They wanted the birds TO get out.

Geovanna Morales - Story in past tense

People were watching a movie in Central. It was night and there were stars in the sky. Some people thought the stars were more interesting than the movie and they looked up. Other people thought the movie is boring and they began to talk. "Please be quiet," someone said. "But the movie was not interesting," the man said. "It may not be interesting to you, but it was very interesting to me," the first man said. The two men became very angry and began to shout. Then nobody could hear the movie. Then it began to rain. Somebody asked for his money back but then remembered that the movie was free. He wanted to complain but there was nobody to complain to. The movie was controlled by a computer, not a person. Then he woke up and realized he was only dreaming. He was in his bed. He looked out the window at a sky full of stars.

---

Geovanna, there is only one error. I think it was not really an error but an oversight:

-movie was not interesting.

Letter from Mexico (from the New Yorker Magazine)

May 21, 2010

ABSTRACT: LETTER FROM MEXICO about La Familia Michoacana and the pervasive power of drug traffickers in the country. Writer visits the hill town of Zitácuaro in the Mexican state of Michoacán. On the morning before his arrival, the dismembered body of a young man was left in the middle of the main intersection. It was an instance of what people call corpse messaging. Usually it involves a mutilated body and a handwritten sign. “Talked too much.” “You get what you deserve.” The corpse’s message—terror—was clear enough and everybody knew who left it: La Familia Michoacana, a crime syndicate whose depredations pervade the life of the region.

Mexico’s president, Felipe Calerón declared war—his metaphor—on the country’s drug traffickers when he took office, in December, 2006. It was a popular move. Although large-scale trafficking had been around for decades, the violence associated with the drug trade had begun to spiral out of control. More than twenty-three thousand people have died since Calderón’s declaration. La Inseguridad, as Mexicans call it, has become engulfing, with drugs sliding far down the list of public concerns, below kidnapping, extortion, torture, unemployment, and simple fear of leaving the house. The big crime syndicates still earn billions from drugs, but they have also diversified profitably.

In Michoacán a recent estimate found eight-five per cent of legitimate businesses involved in some way with La Familia. Among Mexico’s drug trafficking organizations, La Familia is the big new kid on the block. It first gained national attention in September, 2006, when five severed heads rolled onto the dance floor at a night club in Uruapan, Michoacán. A senior American official in Mexico City told the writer, “La Familia is looking more and more like an insurgency and less like a cartel.” Mentions one of La Familia’s leaders, Nazario Moreno González, who is also known as El Chayo, or El Más Loco (the Craziest). Writer discusses La Familia’s activities with a local politician and relates how the cartel has, in some places, filled the vacuum created by public distrust of the police and the courts.

The overwhelming growth of organized crime in Mexico in the past decade is often blamed on multiparty democracy. Until 2000, the country was basically a one-party state for seventy-one years under the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI). Drug trafficking flourished, but its practitioners enjoyed stable relations with officialdom. Describes how the election of Vicente Fox in 2000 changed the status quo between drug traffickers and government. Writer gives a survey of other significant Mexican drug cartels, including the Sinaloa cartel, and the Zetas, who had previously occupied Michoacán. Tells about the rise of La Familia in 2006 and its expansion into nearby states. Discusses U.S.-Mexico relations and the drug trade. Writer visits a drug-rehabilitation center in Zamora. Describes acts of kidnapping and extortion perpetrated by La Familia.
